I received this entry from Melissa May, a graduate of Northwestern's Medill School of Journalism last evening. You can find Melissa on Twitter here

http://twitter.com/mel_mayhem

After 37 years of working for the same company, my dad will be retiring in August. Although my dad is really good at keeping himself busy and loves to do exciting things like mowing the grass and changing the oil, he needs a fun activity that will allow him to relax and learn at the same time. He needs something that he can enjoy with his wife on a regular basis. He needs something better than Sutter Home White Zinfandel. He needs Israeli wine.

My dad's always been there for me, imparting me with wisdom such as "Don't chug your beer" and "Drink your prune juice." Unfortunately, as a poor college student, I am unable to provide my pop with what he truly deserves--a really nice gift that's not "pop" corn or "pop" tarts or "pop" sicles.

He really deserves some fantastic Israeli wine!

My dad Henry Romer should win the wine because although he is an expert in many areas, Israeli wine is not one of them.

He was born in CA, raised in NY, and lives in WA so he definitely can have wine shipped to his home and is thus eligible.

Growing up I always thought dad was busy working all the time, but somehow he had time to be my cubmaster and scoutmaster all those years. I guess that's 10 years of leading a group of boys and their parents though thick and thin. Canoe trips, snow caves, backpacking - you name it. In high school when I caught the cycling bug he came out and rode the weekly time trial with me. Not just watching, but participating.

My dad has a Phd in Physics and taught himself to be a mechanical engineer. In retirement he learned to be kayak instructor and is an expert in Greenlandic techniques.

Unfortunately, I am worried that his current wine knowledge consists of Gewurtzaminer and "other". I'm sure winning this contest would help considerably in changing this drastic situation.

Thanks.

My Dad deserves this because he needs to have more variety in his life. He taught me to enjoy the fine things in life and work hard to get them.

My Dad deserves this because he cares for my oldest daughter. After my first wife passed from cancer my daughter had really clung onto my Mother as her Mother figure and why fight the happiness of a child? My Dad didn't, he helps me stay in touch and keep up with her and know she is well.

My dad deserves this more than any mere mortal on the planet for several reasons:

1) He's just about to turn 96, yet still drinks wine daily (albeit out of a box)
2) He knows how to say L'chaim in four languages
3) He's been to Tulip winery and ended up buying a bottle of olive oil (go figure)
4) He has exceptional empathetic children

Need I say more. Please notify me when the prize is ready.

Thank you for your support.

My dear friend Melissa,

We, The Shaffer Board of Directors, have reviewed your request to dismiss Saint SteveO Shaffer from the contest. We carefully, carefully reviewed your request to exclude Saint SteveO because of the fact he is the owners father of the beloved Company, Israeli Wine Direct. We can honestly, without a doubt, see where one person could construe it as being a major, major conflict of interest. We don't take cheating lightly. Let me tell you! However, It is with great regret, that we must inform you that your request to dismiss, the Saint of all Saints has been DENIED. He will remain in the contest!

However, good news! You may submit a written appeal to Jon Shaffer within 30 days with your concerns. Now, if you don't mind........

Steve Shaffer should get the wine because he lives in a state to which the wine may be shipped! He is also a saint, but is not a mormon.

My dad is an excellent father, however, he does not live in any of the states you can ship to. Also, as a practicing mormon, he doesn't even drink wine. Also, we rarely talk. Any information I need to know about my family I get from my brother, who like my dad, is an excellent father, who also lives in a state you don't ship to, but it wouldn't matter as he also doesn't drink. I do have one brother that drinks, however he is neither a father nor does he live in a state you ship to. My father in law, also an excellent father, drinks and collects wine, however lives in Iowa so does not qualify for your contest either. After a careful examination of all the men that are fathers in my life, it seems the only father that I know of that may have any chance of winning is the father of my own children, Cole Pierce. Of course, I don't need to explain to you why he deserves this, if you've been reading this post at all you can see that he deserves it as he most definitively fits your contest criteria and is a saint.

I concur with the comments made from David Shaffer. SteveO Shaffer came in to our lives over 35 years ago and has stuck by his boys through thick and thin, good times and in jail time. He has helped shaped who we are as men, husbands, and most importantly fathers.
I think my Dad deserves the wine gift b/c he should be looked at as a role model for all fathers. As Dave mentions, SteveO is smart, intelligent, funny, caring, wise, a great PopPop, and a great friend to humans and birds. Oh, I forgot to mention that my Dads a Professional Birder... is yours? Didn’t think so... Go ahead and add that to the growing list of why my Dad deserves the wine and feel free to send the gift certificate to him as well.
Thanks for caring and the 2007 White Tulip is delicious.

I've personally known my Dad (StevO Shaffer) for 35 years. He's smart, good looking, caring, funny, drinks wine, drinks beer, drinks anything. He's just the best person I know. The guy really knows everything. If you ask him a question- He's got the answer. Even if it isn't right.

Dad- thanks for being my father - But most of all thanks for being my best friend. You really are a great guy. I love you very much.

Your favorite son- DaveO

p.s. what else do I need to do to win him the gift certificate?
